How to prepare my older children for their sibling session?

Preparing older children for a sibling session with a newborn can help ensure a smooth and positive experience for everyone involved. Here are some tips to help you prepare your older children:

  1. Talk about the arrival of the newborn.

Before your newborn photo session, have conversations with your older children about the upcoming arrival of their new sibling. Explain that you will be taking photos together as a family to capture these special moments. Use age-appropriate language to discuss the role of being a big brother or sister and the excitement of having a new family member.

  2. Include them in the planning.

Involve your older children in the preparation process. Let them choose their outfits for the session, select props or accessories, or even give suggestions for poses or locations. By involving them, they will feel included and more connected to the experience. Let them be a part of it!

  3. Discuss expectations.

Talk to your older children about what to expect during the session. Explain that the photos will be capturing them together and creating beautiful memories. Discuss how important it is to be gentle and patient with the newborn and to follow the instructions of the photographer.

  4. Remind them of their importance.

Emphasize to your older children how important they are as the older sibling. Explain that their role includes being a source of support and love for the newborn. This can help them feel proud and responsible, make it about positive interactions during the session.

  5. Practice gentle and safe handling.

If your older children will hold the newborn during the session, make sure to teach them how to do so safely and gently. Show them how to support the baby’s head and neck and remind them to always ask for help if they feel unsure or uncomfortable.

  6. Manage expectations.

Let your older children know that newborns can be unpredictable during photo sessions. There may be pauses for feeding or diaper changes, and it’s important to remain patient and flexible. Explain that capturing genuine moments may take time and that everyone’s cooperation is essential.

  7. Offer incentives or rewards.

Consider offering small incentives or rewards for their good behavior and cooperation during the session. This can motivate them and create a positive association with the experience.

  8. Bring a toy.

Let them bring something with them, like a favourite toy. Sometimes a  cuddly toy helps them feel at home!

  9. Set your own expectations.

Remember, especially if they are pre school age, they are still young. They may not do everything you hope for if you plan for a large range of poses. Try and keep expectations realistic.

Remember, every child is unique, so adapt these tips to fit your children’s personalities and ages. Ultimately, the goal is to create a positive and enjoyable sibling session experience for everyone involved.
